developed within the last hundred years, daylilys vary and sizes, colors, shapes and form. these have been created mostly through hybridization by gardening enthusiasts worldwide, even though they are native to europe, china, japan and korea. it reflects with our human behavior of globalization with change.

seen as disgusting by others, yet remarkably interesting depending on types and situations. in this context, i was just amazed at how many flies there were around these simple white flowers. usually, they flee as one approaches but somehow, these liked to pose.

092009i have yet to find out what this plant is. i found a few of these and was certainly intrigued on how these “spikes” work in this plant. the color change is also very subtle but sharp which i pressume is there to attract something?

flowerall photos posted in this site are distorted, as they are all sharper and more color saturated in the original files. this flower shot was taken in toronto last year, which was really attractive as it was shocking orange. much of the color was lost in the file upload. bugger.

duckthere are so many little details in life we take for granted. everyday things we do, hear, see, etc.. wait a second. stop doing what you’re doing. breathe, observe, analyze, what is it that completes the context in which we live in? i took this photo last year in toronto, but it wasn’t until a few months back that i decided to look up “ducks” on the internet. turns out male ducks are called drakes, and that fur on its beak is what keeps their chest warm. those are used to keep their eggs warm too. they also produce an oily fluid which keeps their outer feather layer waterproof and their feet have no nerves or blood vessels, which means they never feel the temperature.

grassit is always astonishing to think how perfect nature is. the amazing clockwork and cycle of biology that will keep us going for many many years to come. i always find it inspiring to look closely into the cycle of growth and decay, rise and fall, birth and death. to think of how the little time we have to actually think about such details and be thankful for where and what we live. i find a lot of energy in this close-up: the elegance in the “strokes” and its lively green. taken in toronto, july 2008.

featherscanada offers a very pleasant summertime.  even though i was mostly staying in suburbia (toronto area), it was very comforting to walk in large open areas with very green vegetated parks with all kinds of creatures, from playful dogs to crazy multi colored dragonflies.  these are the back feathers of a duck during the warm summer days of 2008.
