may 3 was declared the world press freedom day by the united nations to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of press. while journalism has been suffering and changing for good and bad, it is of our responsibility and our right to practice and have access to press freedom, including good governance, media coverage of terrorism, impunity and the role of media in post-conflict countries.

a red-eye flight into detroit with a two to three hour connection seemed to be the end of the world as we rushed back from short weekend trip to seattle back to an all-nighter ahead of us. regardless of the fact that me and my partner were already halfway through failing our most important class, these northern sunrays from an approaching winter managed to spread a slight contagious possitive feeling through our bodies. we smiled and carried on to pursue that “a” we got for our final.

a journey ends and another continues. i’m back in beijing and am here to sail through these final months of ups and downs. and just i always mention, life goes on. no matter what happens, good or bad, there is no end: our multiple stories continue and others tasks will have to be taken care of. this post marks 10 months.

currently in barcelona: the winds are cold and the skies are grey. was fortunate enough to have a relatively dry day, a break from the rainy days that spain has been facing. been looking back and reminiscing the few sunrises i have experienced in the last few days, missing the golden glow offered by the mediterranean port of alexandria, egypt. need some warmth and still can’t digest the freezing (literally) weather that awaits in beijing.

so many different environments in which one can experience “things” in life. in this case, this is what i felt as the sun came up in downtown san francisco. this drastic contrast of light behind the building was just breathtaking and inspiring. the visual effect it created was complemented by the seagulls and the chilly weather.

san jose doesn’t change much. throughout my lifetime, i have counted the few buildings that rise from the low density urban cluster. my opinion about this is that there is no urban planning at all, and yes, many would agree. these clusters have been overdeveloped while some buildings are vaguely rise here and there under very innappropriate infrastructure. the one building to the right is the costarican electricity company (i.c.e.) and the one on the left is the corobici hotel (recently bought over by the crown plaza). this view is responsible of welcoming visitors upon their arrival from the airport.

i often hear people share their terrible flying experiences, or how they dread it or even fear it. well, to be honest, tsa isn’t really helping either. however, you do have to go back and think for a second. you are flying, you look out the window and you see birds, clouds, cars, cities, lights from a whole new perspective. the cherry on the top: you even magically land in a different place where you get new insights and experiences. this photo shows a setting sunrise midflight in the pacific between asia and america, all this, through the luxury of having windows in the air.

there is something awakening about the sunrise, no matter how much you dread it. might sound a little dumb, but i mean it. be it after an all nighter, working or partying or waking up early, or for whatever reason that you encounter the sun rising witihin the horizon, it is inspiring if you reflect upon it. i probably slept for a total of ten hours the week i took this photo, the savannah skyline – spring 2007.. still managed to bring a smile out.
this post marks a month.
